After a lot of work, “Large trispectrum in two-field slow-roll inflation” was released on the arXiv yesterday as arXiv:1203.6844. In this article Joe Elliston, Laila Alabidi, David Mulryne, Reza Tavakol and I look at the generation of higher order statistics during inflation in the early universe. In the early universe the curvature perturbations, which later are seen as temperature fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), are initially thought to be Gaussian, but can become skewed during inflation depending on the physics of their evolution.

My latest paper “Calculating nonadiabatic pressure perturbations during multifield inflation”, written with Adam Christopherson, has now been published in Physical Review D as Phys. Rev. D 85, 063507. The DOI is 10.1103/PhysRevD.85.063507 and if you want to get the (freely available) arXiv version the number is arXiv:1111.6919. This paper investigates the isocurvature or nonadiabatic perturbations during inflationary expansion with more than one field. We performed numerical simulations using Pyflation version 0.

Last Tuesday was a bit hectic for me as I tried to coordinate the last minute changes needed to put two papers on the arXiv servers for the next day. The two articles which are now available are numbered 1111.6919 and 1111.6940: Calculating Non-adiabatic Pressure Perturbations during Multi-field Inflation Ian Huston, Adam J. Christopherson Abstract: Isocurvature perturbations naturally occur in models of inflation consisting of more than one scalar field.

My latest paper has just hit the arXiv and is now available. The paper builds on the numerical work I previously completed on cosmological perturbations beyond linear order. The new results do not assume slow-roll in the calculation of the source term for the second order equations of motion and so allow a much greater range of potentials to be analysed. The paper is called “Second Order Perturbations During Inflation Beyond Slow-roll” and already has a record on SPIRES and Inspire Beta.

I am currently finishing up a paper that is about to be submitted to the arXiv and I thought I would go through the list of things I normally do just before sending the work off. It’s mainly a common sense list but in the rush to get something out it is good to have a list to work from to make sure you don’t miss anything (misspelling collaborators names is not helpful!).

• Check bib style is correct. If the journal you are planning to submit to has a particular house style for the bibliography it is probably worth using it in the arXiv submission.
• Check bibliography text is correct. Even though I think BiBTeX is the great, and much easier than preparing the bibliography by hand (which some people still do), there can be instances when a stray space or mistakenly capitalised letter appear. If you get your BiBTeX entries from SPIRES or Inspire this is mostly taken care of, but there is always the odd paper or book entry that you have typed in by hand. Check the final output in the paper, not just the .bib file contents.

A colleague mentioned today that the front page of the venerable SPIRES database of High Energy Physics papers is now promoting the new Inspire interface which was announced a few years ago.

The website for the current beta phase of the project is http://inspirebeta.net.

It is unclear to me whether “Beta” is part of the site name, as suggested by the URL and the text on the INSPIRE page, or whether this is just the beta phase of the INSPIRE project as the SPIRES homepage seems to imply. It would certainly be an odd decision to use a different URL for the beta phase and force everyone to change bookmarks, references in blogs, literature etc., once the beta phase is over.

These are quick first impressions because I haven’t had much time to use the new service. First off it is fast. Very fast. So fast that when searching for my name INSPIRE claims that the “Search took 0.00 seconds”. It feels almost instantaneous. This might be because of a light load before the hordes using SPIRES are switched over. It is certainly an improvement on the interminable and often futile stretches of time needed with the SPIRES engine.

I don’t regularly look up new papers on my phone, preferring the ease of checking them on my desktop at work. However when travelling or attending a conference it can be very handy to be able to quickly pull up some paper you half remember in the middle of a conversation.

As an Android user for a while now, the options were previously limited to navigating to the arxiv website which doesn’t really scale well onto a phone screen, and manually searching for the right paper, or scanning the new list. For a while there has been an iPhone app called arXivew which listed the latest papers and allowed you to easily download and view the one you wanted.

Now, there is an Android app to compete.

I passed my viva examination a few months ago, and after very helpful suggestions from my two examiners I submitted the final version of my PhD thesis to the QMUL authorities a month ago. The paperwork all went through so I have now completely finished my doctoral training. All that remains to be done is the celebratory donning of a floppy cloth cap and scarlet robes at the graduation ceremony in a few weeks.

My new paper, written with Karim Malik, has just been released into the wild. We show that it is possible to numerically simulate second order perturbations for a single scalar field with a canonical action. I’ve been working on this for a long time and learned a lot about the mechanics of inflation in the process. I’ve also churned out quite a lot of python code, and learned some rudimentary parallel programming.

As the new semester is starting in earnest, I think it’s time for me to post the first update for a few months. One of the main differences between post-graduate and under-graduate life is that as postgrads we don’t have a 3 month break over the summer. As seminars finish at the same time as lectures, the summer months can be more productive as long as you don’t get distracted by the summer sunshine.

My talk in Portsmouth was on Tuesday of last week, and with the exception of a bit of trouble with the train on the way down, it seemed to go well enough. I didn’t run wildly over time or commit any other glaring mistakes, but did get a bit of a grilling in the question session. I suppose I need some practice on how to deal with problem questions, in which an answer can’t or shouldn’t be attempted in a short space of time.

So it turns out that I am going to give a talk at UK Cosmo next week. It’s only supposed to be 18 minutes long, which you might imagine wouldn’t be that difficult to put together, but as you can tell from the lack of posts here recently, I’ve been having some problems. The talk is supposed to be based on our last paper (which will soon appear in JCAP by the way), but with limited time I think I will have to speed through it pretty quickly.

Sorry about not posting for a while, I needed to fly home for a few days and am only back in college today. An interesting discussion has started up around the science blogosphere about science writing techniques and whether the usual conventions are necessary or even useful. Chad Orzel started off by listing his pet peeves, some of which I agree with, especially Myth 4: Scientific results are supposed to be a surprise.

[Shameless plug of my own work alert!] So today I finally became a ‘proper’ scientist and saw my name on the listings of the arXiv. Our new paper, Gravitational Wave constraints on DBI inflation, makes life difficult for the usual DBI brane inflation models by specifying some pretty strong limits on their existence, depending on the size of the scalar tensor ratio. In a nutshell, if gravitational waves from the CMB are observed, these models will have a hard time surviving.

Every day I use web-based tools in my research. Some are specifically designed for scientific research, but some are just general purpose tools. It continually surprises me when other students and more established researchers have not heard of the many different ways the web can help research. This list is not meant to be exhaustive so please let me know if there are any tools you use that deserve a mention.
